IR Balloon-Borne Remote Sensing of Atmospheric Species

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Many compounds of interest in stratospheric chemistry have strong infrared absorption bands. Data concerning their altitude distribution have been obtained using balloon-borne instruments to gather solar occultation and atmospheric limb emission spectra in the middle infrared. Specific examples are given illustrating the capabilities and limitations of the techniques.
