Abstract
This paper discusses the close dependence of certain kinds of laser remote sensing measurements on spectroscopic detail--namely, properties of the species being measured, interferences from other spectra, and the spectrum of the laser light source. Our purpose is to summarize the processes that need to be taken into account in quantitative remote measurements, and to indicate the extensive literature now available.
