Emissive Reference Spheres as Absolute Calibration Sources for an Orbiting LWIR Sensor*

Abstract

An orbiting LWIR sensor may be calibrated by deploying emissive reference spheres at known temperatures into its field of view. Observations of stars made with a sensor calibrated in this way offer an independent means for calibrating the irradiances of standard stars. The planning for such a calibration experiment will be discussed.
