Abstract
An optical pulse can be compressed by a dispersive grating pair after first inducing a frequency chirp in a single-mode optical fiber.1,2 It is of interest to know how much compression is possible and what will be the necessary fiber length and grating separation given some particular initial optical pulses. This is not immediately obvious because the achievable pulse compression and the quality of the compressed pulse are sensitive functions of the input pulse parameters and also depend critically on fiber length and grating separation.
