Abstract

Studies of the nonlinear and ultrafast properties of semiconductor diode lasers are necessary for an improved understanding of their high speed modulation, and ultrashort pulse generating, characteristics. Previous workers have used picosecond light pulses to probe the electrical modulation characteristics and time-average gain in these devices. In our work we have used optical pulses to both induce and probe ultrafast dynamics of diode laser gain. Our results, the first observations of subpicosecond behavior in diode lasers, provide direct information on the performance of active devices.
