Abstract

Martinez1,2 has discussed the use of ABCDEF matrices with frequency dependant entries to describe wideband optical systems. This treatment works only for time invariant optical systems and requires the use of an auxiliary phase function. In this paper, we show how to model dispersive optical systems (including those with time varying elements) by the use of 4 by 4 matrices that are highly analogous to the ubiquitous ABCD matrices.
