Analysis of Eye Motion During LASIK

Abstract

In performing refractive surgery without eyetracking technology, the surgeon must guide the patient's pupil center to the axis of the laser. However, because of saccadic eye movements and delays in surgeon compensation, the center of the pupil is typically only localized to a small region about the laser axis. We have developed a software package for analyzing videotaped procedures to determine the location of the laser axis relative to the eye pupil. In this manner, the surgeon's ability to track the pupil can be assessed. Furthermore, by making some assumptions about the nature of the ablation, the ablation pattern can be reconstructed from the video images.
