Abstract
The absorption cell described here was designed for studies of weak singlet-triplet and orbitally forbidden electronic transitions of polyatomic molecules in the vapor phase. The basic requirement of the absorption cell is that it have a variable path length and be capable of achieving an over-all path length of at least 50 m. As an aid in the assignment of the vibronic bands, which, in general, form very complex patterns in the visible or ultraviolet regions of the spectrum, provision was made for cooling the cell at reduced temperatures.
