Abstract
Volcanic ash contains a variety of metal and inorganic oxides. The chemical composition of Mt. St. Helens volcanic ash has been extensively studied because of the rare occasion of a volcanic explosion in the continental United States. Recently a Raman spectroscopic investigation of Mt. St. Helens volcanic ash was made. The major component of the Mt. St. Helens volcanic ash is silica oxide and the different forms of silica were detected in the Raman spectra. Other metal oxide bands were also identified. These investigations show Raman spectroscopy as a good analytical tool in the study of volcanic ash because it provides a rapid fingerprint pattern. It is, therefore, of interest to analyze the Raman spectra of volcanic ash from other eruptions compared with that of Mt. St. Helens.
