Spectral Modal Decomposition of Abrupt Fiber Tapers Based on Simulated Annealing Method

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

A novel solution for the abrupt tapers’ modal decomposition is proposed based on the simulated annealing method. A single spectral measurement extracts the taper's modal contents using prior knowledge of device analytics. A perturbed mode-coupling model provides the optimization initialization. The modal decomposition performance is evaluated based on the spectral matching with various fabricated tapers. Several optimization tuning parameters are identified. The emergence of LP $_{11}$ , LP $_{12}$ , LP $_{21}$ , and LP $_{22}$ modes for a perturbed taper are experimentally verified.
