Depolarization of Plane-Polarized Light by Light-Guiding Frog Rods

Abstract

The light transmitted by a bleached rod in the unfixed frog’s retina is depolarized to a few percent. The depolarized light is transmitted along the edge of the outer segment. A significant part of this effect is caused by the differences of phase velocity of the guided dielectric-waveguide modes that are possible in the frog-rod outer segment.
