Abstract
To describe the dynamics of the field of supershort pulses with a continuous spectrum in transparent nonlinear media, a wave equation is derived that takes into account the dispersion not only of the linear part of the polarization response of the optical medium but also of the nonlinear part. It is shown that dispersion of the nonresonance electronic nonlinearity of the medium in the process of self-broadening of the spectrum of a femtosecond pulse can produce broadening of its "violet" region, including an increase of the generation efficiency of the tripled frequencies, with simultaneous weakening of the "blue" region and maintenance of the "red" region of the spectrum. © 2004 Optical Society of America
