Abstract
Based on the MODTRAN 4.1 optical model, numerical studies have been carried out of how the atmosphere affects the conditions under which thermal sources are detected in the UV region. Assuming the use of the photon-counting regime, Poisson statistics are used to estimate the detection range as a function of the state of the atmosphere, the altitude, and the observation geometry. Recommendations are presented for the optimum choice of the optical sensitivity range of the device. An estimate is made of the necessary degree of background suppression outside the transmission band of a square-response filter. © 2005 Optical Society of America
