Feature Issue of Optics Express

Tiny Integrated Lasers and Their Application to Industrial Laser Technologies

Submission Deadline: 26 August 2024

Optics Express welcomes submissions to a feature issue on "Tiny Integrated Lasers and Their Application to Industrial Laser Technologies" in conjunction with the 10th Tiny Integrated Laser and Laser Ignition Conference 2024 (TILA-LIC 2024). Whereas meeting participants are particularly encouraged to submit their work, the tiny integrated laser feature issue is open to all contributions in related areas.

Miniaturization of powerful lasers has the potential to radically change the way lasers are used in industry. Examples include laser ignition of various fuel mixtures, laser shock-wave-based processing, laser induced breakdown spectroscopy, photo-acoustic nondestructive measurement, applications of THz radiation, laser beam acceleration, and fusion sciences. This feature issue will highlight the design of compact solid-state lasers, the development of laser materials, as well as the different applications of lasers and could be the trigger for the new horizon of ubiquitous power lasers.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Sources and Materials for Miniature Integrated Lasers
    • Miniature lasers for high power, giant-pulse generation; power-scalable laser architectures; solid-state micro-chip lasers;
    • Pumping methods of solid-state lasers, size reduction and miniaturization solutions;
    • Design of laser resonators, thermal management and beam quality control;
    • Fiber and waveguide lasers;
    • Laser crystals and glasses; ceramic materials as laser media; nonlinear materials for frequency conversion; spectroscopic characterization;
    • Composite media for laser applications; bonding techniques for laser materials.
  • Applications of Miniature, Tiny Integrated Lasers
    • Laser ignition for green technologies (transportation, stationary natural-gas engines, aerospace applications, and fusion);
    • Processing with laser radiation (laser peening, ultrafast laser processing, femtosecond machining; laser particle acceleration);
    • Optical communications, and quantum technologies
    • Accessing new wavelength domains (intra-cavity wavelength conversion, visible and ultra-violet generation, THz generation and application);
    • Laser diagnostics (LiDAR, LIBS, Photo acoustic measurement);
    • Interaction of laser radiation with matter.

All submissions need to present original, previously unpublished work and will be subject to the normal standards and peer review processes of the journal. The standard Optics Express Article Processing Charges will apply to all published articles. To be eligible for publication, an expanded conference paper needs to add value to the original conference proceedings and the conference paper number must be included in the cover letter at submission. Please see Optica Publishing Group's guidelines on expanded conference papers for details.

Please prepare manuscripts according to the author instructions for submission to Optics Express and submit through our Prism submission system, specifying from the drop-down menu that the manuscript is for the feature issue on tiny integrated lasers.
