Abstract
We propose a multi-projection 3D display system with dynamically switched viewing zone by employing birefringence in uniaxial crystal. In the uniaxial crystal, the optical paths are different depending on the polarization state of light. By combining the uniaxial crystal with a projector array, the position of projection origin is modulated and the viewing zones of the multi-projection system are spatially switched. The combination of dynamic viewing zone generates multiple binocular conditions without mechanical movement of projector and lens. In the experiment, we implement the dynamic viewing zone switching system, which consists of five laser scanning projectors, pixelated polarization rotator of liquid crystal panel, and calcite plate. The experimental result shows that each projection unit can represent two different viewing zones and the position of viewing zone is independently switched by modulating the polarization state of each projection image via pixelated polarization rotator.
