Abstract
We report the early results of an investigation of two candidate materials for visible solid-state lasers. The materials are Pr.Ca5(PO4)F (Pr:FAP) and Pr:SrAl12O19 (Pr:SAM). Our efforts have included standard spectroscopy, lifetime data, site selection spectroscopy and energy level analysis of Pr:FAP, and laser experiments. Pr:SAM has the more favorable spectroscopic properties of the two materials, and several of its properties are also superior to those of Pr:YAG. We have thus far demonstrated pulsed laser emission from a spectroscopic sample of Pr:SAM at both 480 and 641 nm at cryogenic temperatures.
