Abstract
The chemical oxygen iodine laser (COIL) is an electronic transition, high energy chemical laser operating at 1.3 μm.1 The advantages of the COIL as an industrial laser include the oscillation wavelength ideal for power transmission through silica fibers, the capability of yielding extremely high cw output, fundamental high efficiency as a chemical laser, and fundamental good beam quality as a gas laser. In a more practical way, the COIL possesses the advantages of both CO2 and YAG lasers, i.e„ the capability of high power cw operation with good beam quality and of efficient power transmission through fibers.
