Abstract
Fiber optic gyros have been under development for inertial navigation applications. To achieve high accuracy, the Sagnac phase shift of two counterpropagating waves in a rotating fiber gyro is nulled by generating a frequency shift Δf between the two waves according to Δf = Ω(2R/λn),1 where Ω is the rotation rate, R is the radius of the fiber coil, λ is the wavelength in the free space, and n is the refractive index of the fiber.
