Abstract
Progress in ultrashot pulse technology of laser diodes makes feasible very high speed (10-Gbit/s) time division multiplexed (TDM) transmission schemes.1-3 However, it is difficult to develop ultrahigh bit rate electronics with well suppressed crosstalk levels, particularly for the receiver end. On the other hand, the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) scheme has the advantage of requiring only low bit rate electronics. Here an increased insertion loss due to complex optics and low yield selections of a set of laser diodes with prescribed wavelength separation are the major restrictions. We report here a basic experiment of separating pulses of different multimodes using dispersive fiber and discuss an alternative scheme of multiplexing a TDM/WDM hybrid which exploits the favorable features of both TDM and WDM.
