Abstract
The 2.94-μm wavelength of the EnYAG laser is well suited for many interactions with biological tissue due to the high water absorption. The laser energy will be absorbed in a very small volume leading to efficient cutting and low damage to surrounding tissue. For most applications fairly low energy per pulse and high repetition rates are desirable. Consequently a 50-Hz, 5-W laser has been developed which utilizes a transfer dye and careful optimization of the laser resonator to mininimize thermal effects. The laser radiation can be readily delivered via a special zirconium fluoride fiber.
