Abstract
New short pulse laser technology has made possible the production of extremely bright (> 1018-W/ cm2 sr) laser sources. Use of these new techniques on a large scale Nd:glass-based laser system makes possible the production of subpicosecond 1000-TW (petawatt) pulses. Such pulses can yield focused intensities exceeding 1021 W/ cm2, corresponding to an electric field in excess of and an energy density equivalent to that of a 10-keV blackbody. Such a source would have important applications in many areas of research.
