Abstract
Demonstration of efficient soft x-ray amplification at 6-8 nm in the Ni-like lanthanide ions by short pulse pumping of preformed plasmas is reported. The experimental data indicate a possibility for further improvement in the efficiency by optimization of the irradiation conditions. The prospects for development of compact short wavelength x-ray lasers are discussed.
