Abstract
Microstructure (MS) [1, 2] and photonic-crystal [3] fibers have opened a new chapter in nonlinear optics, making the whole family of nonlinear-optical processes accessible to low-energy, nano- and even subnanojoule, femtosecond laser pulses. Self- and cross-phase modulation, third-harmonic generation, parametric four-wave mixing (FWM), stimulated Raman scattering, and supercontinuum generation are enhanced in these fibers [4] due to the high degree of light confinement and the possibility to phase-match nonlinear-optical processes by tailoring the dispersion profile of these fibers.
