Measuring Lidar Signals by Photon Counting in the Presence of Intensive Background

Abstract

Photon counting is a way to measure feeble optical signals. In this case, the accuracy is proportional to the accumulated statistical data. The presence of intensive background requires additional statistical data, and, respectivily, additional measuring time in order to estimate correctly the background and separate it from the useful signal. In the present work we discusse and simulate some approaches to measuring lidar signals, which allow to increase the accuracy and decrease the measuring time.
