Abstract
Several research groups have built pulsed coherent CO2 Doppler lidars that are capable of obtaining clear air aerosol returns in the boundary layer at ranges in excess of 20 km. The Wave Progagation Lab of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has developed one such system that is described elsewhere in these abstracts(1). This lidar system produces field data tapes which contain the sampled complex time series of returns from each pulse. Coherent lidar returns from a single pulse are processed off-line to extract the backscatter and velocity at all ranges within a single pulse.
