Abstract
Bi- substituted dysprosium iron garnet (BixDy3-xFe5O12;Bi:DyIG) films are promising material for magneto-optical (MO) memory because of their large Faraday effect in the short wavelength region (λ ≈ 350-800 nm)[1]. Usually, Bi:DyIG films have been prepared by the reactive ion beam sputtering and rf magnetron sputtering method. These methods, however, have some disadvantages. One of them is the difficulty of composition control, especially the Bi content, because of its high vapor pressure. The laser ablation method has been used for preparing Bi:YIG films because of ease of controlling the film composition[2].
