Abstract
The VAD and OVD soot processes for making lightguide preforms typically produce large diameter (25-50-mm) glass rods after sintering which must be stretched and overclad to achieve the correct core/clad ratio in the finished preform. To obtain consistent transmission properties along the entire length of the fiber drawn from the preform, the boule must be stretched very uniformly so that a constant core/clad ratio is maintained along the length of the preform.
