Abstract
Major data communications optical networks are growing in capacity and sophistication to accommodate the demand for reconfigurable and reli able Internet data transport. Traditional SONET rings can no longer economically manage the data traffic and more flexible mesh architectures are looking attractive. The management of such networks requires reconfigurable devices, which are able to switch, recondition, and multicast numerous WDM channels. In these applications the key optical components are used in a limited number of predetermined tasks. In this paper, experimental results show that low loss optical switches can be combined with other optical components to build highly adaptable multi-service devices. As an example,fully flexible WDM optical Add/Drop functionality is demonstrated here, including the power equalization of WDM channels. The functionality can be easily extended using additional active and passive components including wavelength converters, regenerators, amplifiers, passive splitters and circulators.
