Abstract
WDM-PONs are an attractive solution for future broadband Access networks but can be relatively expensive to implement due the cost of the specified wavelength sources. It is well known that spectral slicing of the light from a broadband incoherent source offers the potential for cost reduction, but introduces other problems due to the relatively low source powers available and the excess intensity noise (EIN) due to the spontaneous-spontaneous beat noise generated at photodetection.1,2
