Abstract
Quantum wells consisting of alternating thin layers of two semiconductor materials have shown interesting nonlinear optical and electrooptical effects. Some of these, particularly electroabsorption resulting from the quantum confined Stark effect, are very large effects that can be applied to novel optical and optoelectronic devices operating at low energies and in practical conditions Quantum wells and related layered semiconductor structures are also of considerable interest for their electronic properties, both for physics and devices. These factors make research in such structures very active in both the pure and applied domains.
