Abstract
Titanium:sapphire pumped optical parametric oscillators (OPO) now allow reliable generation of tunable femtosecond pulses, either directly in the visible [1,2], or in the near-infrared spectral region. Typical IR. OPO pulse-widths lie in the 40 to 100 fs range, comparable to the high-power Ti: sapphire pump-pulse duration employed in these experiments. However, the potentially very wide bandwidth of the parametric process, which is not limited by optical transition breadths, allows one to envisage the production of OPO pulses much shorter than the pump pulse.
