Abstract
Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) of the 308-nm output of XeCl lasers in Pb vapor is an efficient means of generating blue-green radiation suitable for numerous underwater applications. To date this has only been achieved by using relatively long-duration pump pulses (40 ns). Some applications (particularly bathymetry) require shorter-duration pulses. We investigated SRS in Pb vapor using short-duration pump pulses (5 ns). When these pulses were employed substantially reduced conversion efficiency resulted. In addition previously unreported transient effects became apparent and were studied. We describe a technique for improving short-pulse conversion and demonstrate efficiencies comparable to long-pulse systems.
