Surface-enhanced second-harmonic generation using gratings: phase-matching conditions

Abstract

There is a general belief that phasematching between resonances at pump and signal frequency can significantly enhance the performance of nonlinear corrugated systems. These resonances can be plasmon-polariton surface waves in case of metallic substrates and/or waveguide modes inside the nonlinear dielectrics. This belief in the phase-matching comes from general physical arguments—guided wave excitation leads to field enhancement at the pump frequency that can be properly coupled to a mode at the second harmonic frequency. However, only recently with the development of rigorous methods for studying the nonlinear effects, it becomes possible to check the role of the phase-matching.
