Abstract

We present a new method of accurate force measurement by applying the intracavity photoelastic effect in Nd:YAG-laser crystals. This technology allows a significant extension of the measurement range and improvement of the relative resolution compared to well-known optical fiber force sensors. Nd:YAG technology also offers the chance to realize high-accuracy force-measuring sensors in a miniaturized and integrated design. Active stabilization of the laser is not necessary.
