Abstract

High-power planar waveguide lasers that emit in a single mode are of interest for applications in such diverse fields as satellite communications, nonlinear optics or optical computing, for example, an output power of an emitting semiconductor laser may be increased by broadening the stripe width of the active region. However, this generally causes multimode operation in the laser. Furthermore surface emitting lasers provide a broad emission regin to generate large amounts of optical power, but large surface area emitters also produce multimode emission.
