Abstract

A compact, ~140pm long spot-size converter allows to improve the coupling efficiency between SM-fiber and high effective refractive index contrast (Δn=0.02) planar lightwave circuits by more than 2dB. It is implemented in the form of a non periodic segmented waveguide structure with irregular tapering. For the fabrication of the planar structures a simple single step lithography process is sufficient.
