Abstract

The experimental setup used is described in Figure 1. During all experiments, the four bias currents, required to drive the four sections of the laser were kept constant A 1 25 Gbps signal generated by a BER tester was coupled with the DC bias current into the laser gain section. Following a 3dB coupler the output was optically filtered using a 28GHz bandwidth Fabry Perot tunable filter and applied to a 3GHz O/E converter. The resulting electrical signal was applied to a 20GHz sampling oscilloscope and to the BER tester instrumentation. The SMSR was continuously monitored using an OSA (optical spectrum analyzer). The modulation experiments were repeated at various wavelengths and with various modulation indexes ranging between 3-7dB. BER results were measured for the examined wavelengths with the main mode filtered.
