Abstract
We have thus far developed a new fabrication process of photonic crystals of an arbitrary dimension (autocloning) It is based on the automatic evolution of the periodic structure resulting from pattern dynamics cf sputter deposition and sputter etching[1] It has a number of advantages summarized in the following:
*Applicable to ID, 2D, 3D
*Excellent Reproducibility
*Wide variety of material systems
*Simple process, large number of periods
*Flexibility of symmetry and geometry
*Self healing property
In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a new "dimension" of fabrication freedom, i e spatial modulation of the lattice constant(s) and crystal orientations A few typical applications are reviewed
