Influence of the linewidth enhancement factor on modal operation of laser diodes

Abstract

It is experimentally evident that long-wavelength FP semiconductor lasers show multilongitudinal-mode operation even under CW-operation [1], which affects the device reliability in applications. So far, theoretical investigation of the phenomenon has not been found. This could be due to ignorance of either asymmetric cross-saturation of gain or the Langevin noise sources that describe fluctuations by the spontaneous emission in rate equations. Since the former process is determined by the linewidth α-factor [2], it has a strong effect on operation of long-wavelength lasers due to the large values of α. On the other hand, perfect methods to generate the Langevin noise sources are seldom reported.
