Abstract
Compact mode-locked laser sources of tunable picosecond and femtosecond pulses with high peak power are especially attractive in telecommunications for testing fibers and DWDM technique, but also for remote sensing, environmental control as well as for time resolved measurements. In telecommunications the use of optical silica fibers was limited until very recently to either 1.3 μm or 1.5 μm windows due to OH- absorption band at 1.4 μm. The newly developed “zero water peak” fibers allow the access to the previously useless 1.4 microns wavelength range.
