Abstract
Fiducial markers have been used extensively in computer vision for pose estimation and control of robotic movement [1]. Implementing fiducial markers into surface metamaterials enables a pathway for low intrusive added functionality in real-world applications for robotic and computer vision based systems, as was recently shown by Agha et al. for photonic crystal structures [2]. The optical properties of photonic crystal structures are known to be highly dependent on the angle, under which they are observed. Here, we combine fiducial markers (ArUco) with one-dimensional resonant waveguide gratings (also known as photonic crystal slabs (PCS)) to be able to register the PCS position and tilt in a camera-based setup. We introduce a lithography fabrication process and prove the detectability with a simple camera setup in reflection, give an outlook for an implementation into flexible photonic crystal slabs (f-PCS), and briefly point out possible fields of applications.
