Abstract

Using photonic integrated circuits for signal processing on a large number of channels is becoming increasingly important in applications such as optical interconnects in data centers and hardware accelerators in neuromorphic computing. Universal transformations on N channels may be implemented using Mach-Zehnder interferometer meshes and lithium niobate on insulator offers a high bandwidth platform. However, the weak electro-optic effect makes low-voltage phase shifters very large [1]. Resonant structures based on photonic crystal (PhC) cavities enable low-voltage operation at significantly smaller footprints [2], but it remains an outstanding challenge to cascade them into multiport devices.
