Abstract

Polarization cross-saturation in rare-earth-doped fiber lasers and amplifiers has attracted recent interest because of its influence on the performance of concatenated Er3+ fiber amplifiers in long-haul transmission systems1 or on the static and dynamical polarization properties of Nd3+ fiber lasers, such as the occurrence of antiphase dynamics2 or the design of monopolarization lasers.3 The main parameter governing these effects is the polarization cross-saturation coefficient that is directly related to the anisotropy of the microscopic oscillator, representative of the rare-earth ion.
