The generation and propagation of quasi-continuous trains of dark soliton-like pulses in 2 km of optical fiber

Abstract

In the normal dispersion regime in optical fibres pulse propagation may be described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) for which dark soliton solutions exist. Dark solitons may be less sensitive to certain perturbations than bright solitons and may therefore have potential applications in high bit-rate communications. However, dark solitons have a tanh electric field profile, with odd symmetry in time, so that the generation of dark solitons is more involved than the generation of bright solitons.
