Instabilities in a Gaussian Cavity Mode Laser Model with Gaussian Pump Profile

Abstract

The stability of the standard laser model with a gaussian beam profile for the laser beam was analyzed by Lugiato and Milani [1], who obtained that no laser instabilities appear in this case, at difference with the plane-wave model. This strange result was partially cleared by Smith and Dykstra [2], who numerically studied the same model but including a gaussian profile also for the pump. We analytically determine the conditions under which the unstable behaviour of the plane-wave model is recovered in the gaussian laser mode model.
