Waveguidecoupling at supercritical angles

Abstract

An electromagnetic wave incident upon an ideal planar waveguide from a bounding medium is both partly reflected and transmitted. However, even the transmitted part of such a wave cannot couple into guided modes of the waveguide. We have simulated this interaction by the special geometry of a radiating electric dipole at a distance of less than half of a wavelength to the waveguide. In this case, the farfield-approximation of the dipole is no longer correct and its nearfield has to be considered too.
