Abstract
We perform detailed polarization measurements of second-harmonic generation from glass surfaces to address the importance of electric-dipole and higher-multipole contributions to the effective surface nonlinearity. The results are shown to violate strongly a simple rule regarding pure electric-dipole origin of the effective surface nonlinearity.
