Abstract

A conventional biocular was designed to magnify the image obtained in a cathode ray tube(CRT) display Simultaneously both eyes are used to enable a comfortable long time viewing and an exact positioning of the eyes is not necessary. We used large lenses (80 mm) to allow the required large exit pupil. Problems of weight and alignement in this design, consisting of five lenses, were solved in a new design consisting of four lenses, in which one lens is an axial gradient lens. It allows us to get a spherical aberration correction improving performance of the biocular.
