Abstract
A missile design problem which has evaded solution for a long time is the conflict in shape of the seeker lens. For efficient aerodynamics (i.e. low drag) a sharp conical or ogival shape is designed; for good optics, a hemispherical shape is best. A spike lens has poor optical performance, and a blunt lens has very large wave drag at supersonic speeds.
