Abstract

Lithium niobate, LiNbO3, has long been considered a promising electrooptic material. The development of high quality LiNbO3 optical waveguiding layers1 has stimulated demonstration of many low voltage, high speed optical devices. However, an interaction occurring between the laser and the crystal known as optical damage2 has severely limited their practical application.
